In Canada we are extremely fortunate to have beautiful trails and stunning landscapes for electric scooter riding. Our winters however can be harsh, and extra care must be given to our two-wheeled friends. If you’re Winter scooter riding, here are 5 tips to help maximize your ride in the colder months.
1. Wear a helmet
A helmet is always advised but especially in colder conditions where black ice, salt and other hazards can go unseen, protecting your head is extremely important.
Don’t have a helmet yet? Pick up a stylish Segway Helmet.
2. Dress for the weather
It may seem obvious but proper attire can make a huge difference. When you’re standing still on our scooter, your body doesn’t generate the same amount of body heat as a physical activity such as biking or walking. So layer up!
Don’t forget about the wind chill. Consider wind speed and don’t forget to factor in your electric scooter’s speed too.
Example: Today the temperature is 5°C with 25km/h wind gusts. I rode my Ninebot MAX at 30km/h. With the wind in my face it felt like 55km/h gusts. Therefore, as I’m riding, the wind chill will make the air feel like -2°C.

3. Plan your trip
Winter scooter riding can affect your battery life because of the colder temperature. Similar to a cell phone exposed to the cold, expect to see your range reduced as much as 50%. Plan your trips accordingly to ensure you’re not left without charge. We suggest mapping out your routes before leaving the house and packing your charger as a backup.
4. Warm Your battery before riding and charging
Before leaving the house, turn your scooter on for a few minutes and allow the battery to warm up before going outside. Likewise, when you get home from your adventure, give the battery a chance to warm up inside before plugging it in to charge. This will prevent condensation from forming and reduce the stress on the battery.
5. Do not ride in extreme conditions
In extreme weather conditions, such as snow, ice, sleet, hail, or heavy rain, riding is not advised. Double check your scooter’s IPX rating to see how it handles moisture. A good rule of thumb is – if you can’t see the pavement, keep the scooter at home.
Other Winter Scooter Riding Tips
- Wipe your scooter down at the end of every trip. Mud, water, and especially salt can be harmful to your scooter.
- If your scooter has pneumatic tires, check your tire pressure before every ride.
- If you plan on tucking your scooter away for the winter months, charge it up once a month to 100% battery. This is part of maintaining good battery health.
Ride safe this winter!
